Cortisone Injections

Sport and Exercise Physicians use Cortisone injections to help reduce inflammation, the cause of pain redness and swelling within a joint or Bursa (fluid buffer ). Cortisone injections are unique to the site injected, an injection earlier in the year in one area does not preclude injection in another.

The type of cortisone used is determined by the structure being injected and is always accompanied by a local anaesthetic to reduce the pain of the procedure.

At SOAR we use a sonographer with a high-end Ultrasound machine to accurately guide these injections, the actual site of which is determined after careful history taking and investigation on the day. An important point of difference also is the Cortisone is carried by us on site, no need to be sent off to a chemist and come back another time with the drug.

Cortisone takes 2–3 days to have full effect, during this time it is sensible to take it easy with the affected body part. We can provide work certificates to assist with this communication if needed. Like all injections there is a reported risk of 1: 10000 of infection. This is simply because the skin barrier is penetrated with a needle; we reduce the likelihood of this with purpose-made anti-bacterial preparations applied to the skin before the procedure. We can proudly say we have never had an infection following an injection at SOAR.
